About Prof. Tzong-Han Tsai

Professor Tzong-Han Tsai has an extensive research background in natural language processing, computer vision, and digital humanities. In the field of natural language processing, he is particularly dedicated to developing large language models for low-resource languages. As the lead of the model training team for the Trusted AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE) project, he has successfully advanced Taiwan’s research in this area. He created a training dataset and a corresponding translation model for mixed Mandarin-Taiwanese languages, work that was accepted at the premier NLP conference, EMNLP 2022.

In the realm of digital humanities, Professor Tsai has applied natural language processing techniques to ancient Chinese historical materials, focusing on records from the Ming Dynasty’s central government—known as the Ming Shilu (Veritable Records of the Ming). This research has not only been presented at the leading international conference on digital humanities, Digital Humanities, but has also been accepted by the top-tier journal Digital Scholarship of Humanities. In 2023, his research was further recognized with a long oral presentation at EMNLP 2023, one of the foremost conferences in the NLP field.

Professor Tsai has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Advisor Award for Master’s Thesis from the Association for Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing (ACLCLP) in 2022, a Google Research Award in 2023, the first place in the NIH-sponsored BioCreative competition in 2021, multiple championships at the BioASQ international biomedical question-answering competition (jointly organized by European research institutions, NIH, and Google) from 2020 to 2023, the Outstanding Research Award from National Central University in 2020 and 2021, and the top academic prize at the third FEVEROUS fact-checking competition co-hosted by Facebook and Cambridge University.

Driven by a passion to interpret AI in his own way and bring it to the grassroots level, Professor Tsai authored two popular books, AI Lessons for Middle School Students and AI Lessons for Elementary School Students. Both books achieved bestseller status on Books.com.tw, with AI Lessons for Middle School Students receiving the 2023 Recommended Reading Award for Secondary School Teachers from Hong Kong’s EdCity and the 2023 Ministry of Culture Recommended Reading Award.

In addition to these academic achievements, Professor Tsai currently serves as the President of the Taiwan Digital Humanities Association and the Vice President of the Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence, demonstrating his active participation and contributions to these professional societies.
